Oral Surgery

Tooth extraction may be necessary in various conditions, such as a tooth decay, dental infection or crowding. Moreover, people who need braces may also undergo a tooth extraction so as to make space for teeth as they shift. Treatments including chemotherapy or organ transplant may also require oral surgery to remove a compromised tooth or two.

Dental surgery is performed by an oral surgeon or a dentist in an outpatient procedure incorporating general, local or intravenous anesthesia, or perhaps their combination.

In this regard, there are two procedures involved:

  • Simple extraction; for removing visible teeth
  • Surgical extraction; for removing teeth that are broken or below the surface of the gums

Simple Extraction

This procedure involves giving the patient a local anesthesia and loosening the tooth with the help of an instrument called as an elevator. After this, the dental surgeon may take the tooth out with forceps.

Surgical Extraction

This is a complex procedure for pulling teeth out and is done when the tooth isn’t visible above the gum line or has not erupted completely. The dental surgeon will probably administer a combination of both local and intravenous anesthesia to numb the area and calm the patient down respectively. The dentist will then cut into the gum with an incision. Depending on the condition, the dentist can cut the tooth or remove the bone around it in order to extract it.

Preparing For A Tooth Extraction

Dr. Brenda Garrison or Dr. Sara Podoll will first examine your mouth and take X-rays of the tooth to be extracted. At this point, you should tell your dentist about all the supplements, vitamins or OTC medications you take.

Moreover, let your dentist know in case you’ll be treated or operated for another medical condition.

Furthermore, do let your dentist know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disease
  • Hypertension
  • Renal disease
  • Damaged valves of the heart
  • Impaired immune system
  • Adrenal disease
  • Artificial joints
  • Bacterial endocarditis

The dental team at Fort Family Dental would want to ensure that all your conditions are stable before you undergo a tooth extraction. Moreover, you can also expect antibiotics prescribed to you before your surgery if:

  • You have a weak immune system
  • You have a certain medical condition
  • Your surgery may take long

Dr. Brenda Garrison and Dr. Sara Podoll ensure their patients get the best treatment and care. We put our patient’s needs first to give them compassionate, quality and affordable dental care for better oral health.
